Domestic Servitude

Domestic Servitude

Victims of human trafficking are forced to undertake cleaning, cooking, laundry, child minding and other household tasks in private households, they are also beaten and are often raped.

Domestic workers may be trapped in servitude through the use of force or coercion, such as physical (including sexual) or emotional abuse. Children are particularly vulnerable to domestic servitude which occurs in private homes, and is often unregulated by public authorities.

They are told that their “wages” have been taken to cover their board and lodgings.  Victims have no privacy and no freedom to come and go.  In the event they are allowed out to undertake shopping or other errands, they are heavily supervised and under threat at all times. The victims have reported sleeping on cold kitchens floors and in one case a victim reported being made to sleep outside while the family dog is brought inside to sleep in the comfort of warmth.
